The flat season in Horseracing is in full swing and so we caught up with Sophie Clements to find out about one of her horses who is heading to Royal Ascot this year. Due to go in the Queen Mary Stakes (Wednesday 18th June at 2:30pm)
Horse – Zelaina, Bay, Filly
Trainer – Karl Burke based in Middleham, Yorkshire
Horses character – Sweet, loves a fuss, definitely has a game face when it comes to the races.
Racing Groom – Sophie Clements
How does it feel to be part of such a big race meeting?
To go to Royal Ascot itself is such an exciting experience but to have a runner there is truly amazing.
What’s been your preparation routine leading up to race day?
Preparation is key for an iconic meet like Royal Ascot as it’s not just the turning out of Zelaina to look her best, but also myself . Making sure we both look our best on the day is top priority! This involves brushing daily to make sure her coat is shining and keeping her mane and tail silky smooth. As for me it’s all about the outfit so finding something that’s suitable but also fashionable!
Where do you watch the race?
I’ll be cheering her on from the big screen. stood next to the rail, that way I have a clear view of the winning post but can be quick to retrieve her after her run!
What would it mean to you if Zelaina crossed the finish line first?
It would mean so much to me for Zelaina to cross the finish line in front. I would be so proud of her and I know she would be so proud of herself too. To lead up a winner at Royal Ascot is truly a Racing Groom’s dream!
Good luck to Zelaina and ALL the Racing Grooms, Riders and runners at this year’s Royal Ascot meeting which runs from 17th June to 21st June 2025.
