The Steward ensures BHA raceday responsibilities are delivered in accordance with BHA Rules and Instructions, acting as both a Steward and ambassador to support the smooth operation of racedays and uphold the organisation’s values and standards.

Main Duties of a Steward

  • Overall responsibility for BHA raceday team and the most senior point of contact at a race fixture.
  • Identify any concerns or potential breaches of the Rules and Instructions of the BHA taking decisive action to rectify.
  • Ensuring public information, communication and reports are issued promptly and accurately.
  • Collating post-race reports, actioning matters arising or outstanding issues.

  • Knowledge of horse welfare standards.
  • Identification and understanding of raceday equipment.
  • Effective leadership and team management skills.
  • Respectful and professional communication with colleagues, stakeholders, and the media.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Promotes and supports an inclusive culture.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the British Horseracing industry, including Rules, Regulations, and key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates high standards of integrity and professionalism.

Desirable Skills

  • Passion for horseracing and the wider sport.
  • Comfortable and confident around horses.
  • Knowledge of race form, with the ability to read races and analyse outcomes.
  • Outstanding attention to detail with commitment to the aims, values and operations of the BHA.

Working Condition

  • Full-time hours, including attendance at race days on weekends and bank holidays.
  • Extensive travel nationally and internationally as required.
