Starter

The role of the Starter is to oversee all horses, riders and racecourse personnel at the start and ensure that a fair start, in accordance with the Rules of Racing and SOP’s and BHAGI’s, is given for each race.

The Starter works with a team on a raceday to ensure that races are started safely and efficiently from the correct place and not before the advertised time.

Main Duties of a Starter

  • Ensure a safe and fair start for all horses/jockeys.
  • Maintain comprehensive records on each horse and communicate with trainers on individual aspects of their horses to ensure safety and welfare are at the forefront.
  • Conducting each start or stalls test with due regard to their responsibilities under Health and
    Safety Regulations.
  • Controlling all activities, maintaining strict discipline at the start and where necessary
    reporting any instances of misbehaviour to the Stewards.
  • Reporting promptly any cases where starts have not gone according to plan and have or may be subject to Stewards enquiries, press comment or other speculation.
  • Completing all required reports fully, accurately and within permitted timeframes.

What the role requires

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Horse Welfare Standards and security in British Racing.
  • Knowledge of permitted declared raceday tack and equipment.
  • Understanding of the structure of the British Horseracing Industry, Rules, Regulations, Guidelines
    and Stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the relevant BHA Rules and Instructions, including SOP’s and BHAGIs.

Desirable Skills

  • Good general horse knowledge.
  • Highly motivated individual able to operate with tact, diplomacy and maintain control and discipline in difficult situations, under pressure.
  • Confident, respectful and effective communication with colleagues, stakeholders and the public.
  • Professional with high level of integrity and honesty.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time or part-time roles.
  • Working time includes attendance at race meetings on weekdays, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Extensive travel regionally and nationally as required.
