Leo Hawkins, is a Haddon Training apprentice currently completing his Level 3 Business Administration with Racing qualification. Based at Arena Racing Company, Newcastle Racecourse, 19-year-old Leo is one of the first learners to undertake this exciting course, run in direct partnership between Haddon Training and The British Horseracing Authority (BHA).
Leo spoke to us about his decision to pursue a career in racing focused on business operations. Lee says, “I chose to pursue an apprenticeship over a more traditional route, such as college or university. I previously worked as a casual staff member at Newcastle Racecourse within their hospitality department, and I found the racing environment incredibly exciting. I wanted to learn more about the racing industry and the business side of the racecourse, which motivated me to apply for the apprenticeship at Haddon Training and combined my two interests.
During my apprenticeship, I have built on my communication and organisation skills, which has benefited me in both my career and personal life. One of the most rewarding aspects of the apprenticeship is the opportunity to put into practice everything I’ve learned. It’s fulfilling to see our hard work pay off during major racing events such as Plate Day – an event which draws thousands to Newcastle Racecourse each year.”
Jayne Greenman, HR Director at Arena Racing Company adds, “As an employer, we have found the syllabus of the Business Administration apprenticeship marries well with our roles, particularly our Business Coordinator role, where the apprentice is able to directly apply what they have learned in their work environment. Apprenticeships are an essential part of our strategy to attract and retain employees with diverse lived experience. It has been a pleasure to watch our apprentices grow and develop through their time with us.”
Learners completing an apprenticeship with Haddon Training also benefit from the support of industry-experienced Trainer Coaches throughout their course.
Leo says, “My Trainer Coach at Haddon Training has been a great mentor throughout my journey, and has guided me through each of my assignments, ensuring that I am able to complete it to the best standard. Both my Trainer Coach and employer have been hugely supportive during my qualification, and my apprenticeship has provided me with many different opportunities. I was lucky enough to be able to train and successfully attain my first aid certificate, and I have also participated in Salesforce training in Doncaster, which enabled me to boost my business-related skills even further.
I will soon be completing my apprenticeship, and I’d like to continue working for Newcastle Racecourse, develop new skills, and achieve further successes within the business.”
