Main Duties of a Stud Manager

  • Oversee the breeding operation, including covering schedules, veterinary liaison, legal compliance and foaling.
  • Manage staff recruitment, supervision, training, and performance.
  • Ensure high standards of horse welfare, health, and safety at all times.
  • Maintain compliance with industry and statutory requirements.
  • Oversee stud facilities, equipment, and pasture management.
  • Managing budgets, record keeping, and business administration.
  • Report to owners on breeding outcomes, horse welfare, and business performance.

What the role requires

  • In-depth knowledge of thoroughbred breeding practices.
  • Good communication and relationship management with vets, farriers, nutritionists, and regulatory bodies.
  • Knowledge of the breeding industry and wider racing sector.
  • Business management experience, including budgets and staff management.

Desirable Skills

  • Hands-on experience in foaling, covering, and horse care.
  • Strong leadership and staff management skills.
  • Ability to mentor, train, and build an effective team
  • Understanding of compliance, welfare, and biosecurity standards.
  • Budgeting and financial management skills.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time hours, with significant seasonal demands during foaling and covering.
