A Professional Jockey is a licensed athlete responsible for riding racehorses in Flat and/or National Hunt racing under the Rules of Racing.

The role requires exceptional riding ability, physical fitness, tactical awareness, and strong professional judgement. Working closely with trainers and racing teams, jockeys are responsible for delivering the best possible race performance while maintaining high standards of safety, integrity, and equine welfare. This is a physically demanding and highly competitive career involving travel, irregular hours, and continual professional development.

Main Duties of a Jockey

  • Ride racehorses in Flat and/or Jump races under racing rules.
  • Work closely with trainers to prepare horses for racedays.
  • Maintain peak physical fitness and riding performance.
  • Demonstrate strong race tactics, pace judgement, and decision-making.
  • Adhere to high standards of horse welfare, professionalism, and integrity.
  • Attend race meetings, training sessions, and licensing requirements.
