Equine Student Progression Programme

For Equine College students, this is an intensive training course teaching participants how to ride and look after racehorses. Upon successful completion of the seven-week training course, participants will be placed into employment at a Racehorse Trainer’s yard.

Course Overview

The training course will teach participants how to ride and look after racehorses and will be held at the British Racing School in Newmarket. Upon successful completion of the seven week training programme participants will be placed into employment at a Racehorse Trainer’s yard. This seven week residential course runs annually during the summer months. Applications are open all year round but the course will only run once a year.  Successful candidates will be invited to attend an assessment day at the British Racing School.

Applicants attending an assessment day will be required to complete a fitness assessment and discuss their suitability for the course and career aspirations.

  • Exercising Racehorses
  • Feeding, grooming, going racing

Skills & Knowledge

  • This course is for those who have completed a qualification at an Equine College and want to work hands on with racehorses.
  • Good riding skills
  • Previous experience of handling horses.

Eligibility

The Equine Student Progression Programme offers a route into the horse racing industry for those in their final year of studies at an Equine College or who have recently graduated and who have a strong desire and interest to work with racehorses.

How to get into this role

This seven week residential course runs annually during the summer months. Applications usually open in April and close at the end of May. Successful applicants are invited to attend an interview in May, which includes an assessment of fitness and suitability for the course.

On successful completion of the course, students will be placed in a job at a racing yard to continue to develop their skills.

Career Progression

The training course will teach participants how to ride and look after racehorses. Many students would go on to be Racing Grooms, Work Riders and Head Grooms.
