Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer (EWIO)

The role of the Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer (EWIO) is integral to maintaining the security of the Stable Yard at the racecourse stables; safeguarding raceday integrity and racehorse welfare.

Their role is to encourage and promote the flow of intelligence to support actively and strengthen the BHA’s regulatory and integrity focus.

Main Duties of an Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer

  • Work as part of a team to ensure the Racecourse Stable Yard is secure, protecting the integrity and
    welfare of the horse as well as the reputation of British Racing.
  • Undertake post-race sampling of horses as advised by the VO, complying strictly with the BHA
    Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Support and assist Veterinary Officers with testing and examinations in line with BHA policies and
    values.

What the role requires

  • Knowledge and understanding of Horse Welfare Standards and security in British Racing.
  • General equine knowledge and understanding of signs of health and wellbeing.
  • Comfortable and confident in handling Thoroughbreds.
  • Respectful and effective communication with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Sound and up to date awareness of current affairs and priorities, aims, values, standards and
    operations of the BHA.

Desirable skills

  • Team player working collaboratively and in partnership with colleagues and professionals.
  • Understanding of the structure of the British Horseracing Industry, Rules, Regulations, Guidelines
    and Stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of BHA requirements in relation to horse welfare and security.
  • Understanding of relevant BHA Rules and Instructions relating to veterinary, integrity and welfare.

Working conditions

  • Full-time or part-time roles available.
  • Working time includes pre-race day and raceday attendance, including weekends and bank
    holidays.
  • Extensive travel nationally required.
