Abby is a Racing Groom at Gary Moore Racing. Here a look at what her day looks like plus some information on her background and how she got into the sport.

What does your role involve?

I arrive at the yard at 6:30am and muck out 3 horses before riding out my first lot at 7am. We ride about 3-4 lots a day. We usually finish riding at about 10:30am and once all horses are away we have a 30 minute breakfast break. At approximately 11am we will go and groom all our assigned horses which are the 5 we look after day to day and take racing. We will then turn out a couple horses and make sure they’ve all got lunch and everything they need before leaving at 1pm. We then return at 3:15pm to skip out, turn out / bring in and feed before heading home for the day around 5pm. We all get 2-3 afternoons off a week.

What subjects did you study at school?

For my GCSE subjects I chose to take Health & Social Care, BTEC sport, French and History as well as the usual compulsory subjects such as Maths and English etc.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship? And why did you choose this option instead of going to university?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I’ve always struggled with just sitting down and listening to teachers talk so I felt that an apprenticeship was much more suited to me and I liked the idea that I could also earn money whilst learning. I found out about my apprenticeship through visitors to my pony club such as the Jockey Jason Watson & Racing To School.
