Grounds Person

The Grounds Person is responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and enhancement of the racing surface, associated infrastructure, and the wider estate, including horticultural and nongrass areas.

The role supports the delivery of safe, high-quality racing conditions and ensures the racecourse grounds are maintained to the highest standards of presentation and functionality.

This position requires a combination of practical skills, technical knowledge, and the safe operation of machinery and equipment, contributing to both raceday and non-raceday operations.

Main Duties of a Grounds Person

  • Assist in preparing and maintaining racing surfaces.
  • Support installation and upkeep of running rails and fencing.
  • Maintain track, lawns, and landscaped areas.
  • Operate turf care machinery and tractors.
  • Assist with irrigation and turf treatments.
  • Support raceday and non-raceday operations across the estate.

What the role requires

  • Knowledge of racing surfaces and racecourse infrastructure.
  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, or agriculture.
  • Ability to operate machinery (tractors/mowers desirable).
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to health and safety.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable skills

  • Tractor or machinery certification (e.g. LANTRA).
  • PA1 & PA6 spraying qualifications.
  • Experience with irrigation systems or turf management.

Working conditions

  • Outdoor role in all weather conditions.
  • Includes early mornings, evenings, and weekends (racedays).
