Course overview

A 26-week residential course offering learners the opportunity to experience the whole stud year via vocational education and a comprehensive Evening Lecture Programme. The course touches on all aspects of stud work from preparing yearlings, mares and foals for thoroughbred auction, foaling mares and handling youngstock, and caring for our exciting roster of stallions including 7 x Gr.1 winner Stradivarius. The course is complimented by external trips to world class European breeding operations and thoroughbred training grounds as well as work placements with bloodstock agents and sales consignors.

Term 1 (Mid September- December)

Learn how to undertake all aspects of yearling, mare and foal sales preparation, from exercise regimes to presenting thoroughbreds to potential buyers. Experience the sales first hand through the completion of two short paid placements with a reputable consignor at the October and December sales.

Term 2 (January – April)

Gain first-hand experience of the breeding season including foaling, caring for The National Stud’s quality roster of stallions, and assisting in the covering shed. Practical work is complemented by rotations through the Stud Nomination offices, veterinary rounds, off-site trips, management training and career training.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older by the course start date and have equine handling experience
  • International applicants welcome if an appropriate Visa is acquired.
  • Part-time option available.
