The role of the Clerk of the Scales is to assist in guaranteeing the integrity of racing by interpreting and implementing the Rules, Instructions and requirements of racing concerning all Weighing Room procedures.

They ensure that objections are handled correctly and transmitted to the Stewards promptly, whilst maintaining records and completing the official race day return.

Main Duties of a Clerk of the Scales

  • Manage the weighing room and conduct pre-race checks to ensure all riders weigh out correctly and the appropriate riders weigh in after each race.
  • Announce “weighed in” once the Stewards have confirmed the result and the Judge has declared the race official.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication between raceday teams and broadcast partners.
  • Oversee jockey sponsorship and testing procedures, ensuring compliance with BHA Rules, procedures, and values.

What the role requires

  • Knowledge and understanding of Horse Welfare Standards and security in British Racing
  • Team player working collaborating and working in partnership with colleagues and professionals.
  • Knowledge of permitted declared raceday tack and equipment.
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity.
  • Understanding of the structure of the British Horseracing Industry, Rules, Regulations, Guidelines and Stakeholders.
  • Understanding of BHA requirements in relation to the Weighing Room and Scales.
  • A sound understanding of relevant BHA Rules and Instructions, including SOPs and BHAGIs.

Desirable Skills

  • Highly motivated individual able to operate with tact and diplomacy in difficult situations, under pressure.
  • Sound and up to date awareness of current affairs and priorities, aims, values, standards and operations of the BHA.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Working Condition

  • Full-time or part-time roles available.
  • Working time includes attendance at race meetings on weekdays, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Extensive travel regionally and nationally as required.
